History

The Vosne-Romanée cadastre divides the place called "La Romanée Conti" into two plots: AN 258, of 17,213 m², and AN 72, of 927 m², 18,140 m² in all. The Hachette wine guide gives the vineyard as 1 ha 81 a 40 ca, the same area, and notes that its boundaries have barely changed since the sixteenth century.

The vineyard belonged to the priory of Saint-Vivant until 1584, then to the Croonembourg family until 1760. That year Louis-François de Bourbon, Prince of Conti, bought it, and the vineyard takes its name from him. In 1869 Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet acquired it and brought it into the de Villaine family, partners with the Leroy family since 1942. The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti farms it today.

The present vines were planted in 1947. Romanée-Conti is one of the grand cru appellations of Vosne-Romanée, overseen by INAO together with the growers' body for the grands crus of Vosne and Flagey. On 4 July 2015 it became one of the 1,247 climats in "The Climats, terroirs of Burgundy", inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The neighbouring places are other grands crus. La Romanée, just above, is a single plot, AN 74, of 8,452 m². Les Richebourgs border the vineyard to the north, Romanée-Saint-Vivant to the east and La Grande Rue to the south.

The local development plan places plot AN 258 in zone Avs, strictly protected vineyard land. According to IGN’s elevation model, the ground drops about ten metres from the top of the vineyard, to the west, to its lower edge, to the east.

Our view

On the aerial view nothing sets the vineyard apart from its neighbours except the cadastral outline, straight on the east side and stepped on the west.

On the ground, a low stone wall by a track carries its name, carved, and a stone cross stands in front of the vineyard.
