History

The village sits at the tip of a spur about twenty metres above the Ségur valley. In the fourteenth century the Gascon Rolls, the records of the English chancery for Gascony, mention the castle of Castelmoron and Matha d’Albret, lady of Gensac and Castelmoron. The Albret name, later added to that of the commune, refers to this family.

Under the Ancien Régime, Castelmoron was the seat of a seneschal’s court, and the town hall still holds its old cells. Of the fortifications only the Mill Gate survives, on the west side, its approach still paved as it was in the Middle Ages. Around the church, restored in the nineteenth century, and the former grain market, houses crowd along narrow lanes, small squares and flights of steps. Those built against the rock have timber galleries, and several front doors carry wrought-iron fanlights. A stairway leads down to the communal wash house.

On 13 July 1957 Castelmoron took the name Castelmoron-d’Albret. On 8 June 1973 the village was registered as a protected site under the Environment Code, with a boundary that follows the plot lines. The commune has neither a local development plan nor a carte communale, so the national planning rules apply.

The 1968 census counted 82 inhabitants; the 2023 census counts 50. Its 50 dwellings comprise 34 main residences, 7 second homes and 9 empty properties, and two main residences in three were completed before 1919.

INSEE gives the commune an area of 0.04 km², rounded to two decimals; in IGN’s boundary data the next smallest, Vaudherland in the Val-d’Oise, covers almost 10 ha. The cadastre divides this territory into 103 plots, all in section AB, with a combined recorded area of 27,084 m². Streets, squares and steps lie outside any plot. The church stands on plot AB 66, of 304 m².

Our view

On the map the whole commune fits into one aerial view: roofs packed around the church, the wooded slope down to the Ségur, and the commune boundary drawn close to the last houses.

The cadastral plan leaves the streets, squares and steps blank between 103 small plots. On the ground they take a few minutes to walk, down to the wash house at the foot of the village.
